Project Description

Access to safe blood is a key component of an effective health care system and voluntary blood donors are the basis of safe blood supply. In Uganda, the annual blood donations are often insufficient to address the high transfusion need. Hospitals run of blood to give to sick children and pregnant mothers among others who desperately need it.

In conjunction with Mengo and Nakasero Blood banks, the Global Shapers would love to carry out three blood donation drives per year( one every four months) to avail life-saving blood for our pregnant mothers and vulnerable children. The target is 500 Units of whole blood collected in a year.

OUTCOMES:

  • Behavioural change to routine blood donation with a pledge to donate twice a year.
  • Expected to collect 100 units of blood every four months.

IMPACT:

  • Reducing the number of shortages of blood faced by blood banks and hospitals.
  • Decrease in mortality in the community resulting from shortage of blood.
